At 5:51 a.m. on this St. Patrick’s Day, I was stirred from my bed by two grandchildren shouting that I must come downstairs right away to see the chaos left behind by a burgling leprechaun. This was an emergency. With great enthusiasm, they pointed out disaster upon disaster in their house, noting every single thing out of place. Such fascinating memories for children who, like most kids, sometimes fail to put things away because they have no idea where they should go.
Like Ela and Milo, I owe the green blood in my veins to my mother, Ginny June O’Brien Rossi. And I also have a father whose family brought him to America from Italy for a safer and better life.
Our apartment was always decorated with the sparkling green shamrocks and other artwork that I did in school when I was a child. Both my father and mother embraced the mischievous leprechaun who emerged every St. Patrick’s Day. As I recall, I usually went a little crazy with green food dye. And, of course got it on my hands so I was quickly discovered. But June and Gabe always laughed. And they gave me those chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil. Remember those? That’s what I think of whenever I hear about the rainbow and a pot of gold. Those coins.
Thanks for this article; it let me time travel a little bit this morning! 💚
I absolutely love this leprechaun mayhem! Whoever came up with the idea may have just started a new trend. I have never heard of anything like this before. And I am a huge lover of St. Patrick’s Day. Now I must run get the corned beef and all the fixings into the crockpot! Happy Day!
I had never heard of it before, however, my now 31 year old son had a kindergarten teacher that told them all about the hijinks. Guess what we had to do? It was fun, though.
Happy wearing of the green day, Connie! What a delightful way for you and for us to wake this morning ! The smiles this brought to many was well worth your effort on this day! Happy St. Patrick's Day, my friend!
What an absolutely delightful way to start my day. Thank you!
What could ever be luckier than a baby with a shamrock on his fanny??
not a darn thing.

Hi Gaylee. I remember you from your training at Metro. It was great knowing you.
Slaínte! ☘️
You're a delight, Connie!
Connie Schultz: On the Fifth Sunday of Lent, coincidentally St Patrick's Day -- as a Walloon-Catholic, I like St. Joseph's Feast, the 19th, better.
But in my own little world, instead of blaming a distant leprechaun, I blame someone much closer and nearby: . . .
A Republican!
Happy Leprechaun Day! Adorable photo. Delightful story. Perfect message. Thank you. 🍀
Yes, what Shannon said!

I wish I had the chance to try this. But even my grandchildren are all grown now! Glad you enjoyed the shenanigans!

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! ❤️🍀🍀
You have a beautiful way with words!!💚
Milo's little round, padded bottom sticking up is simply adorable!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you and yours!
My father’s birthday was March 16. For years I sent him a card celebrating his (word “almost” inserted) St. Patrick’s Day birthday.
The gag got old in his later years, but he loved Saint Patrick’s Day. Even traveled to Ireland once.
His family link arrived before USA became its own country. Came to Kentucky from Virginia.
Never witnessed such hijinks as yours. Thank you as always for this gift of a column.☘️☘️☘️☘️
Love your quick turn of phrase and immediately accessible folk!
I chuckled with this writing, Thank you for giving me that today. You’re the BEST!
