Playing catch-up, Connie. Husband just had rotor cuff surgery. But that’s a story for another day. My godfather worked for the Treasury Department back in the day. He and my godmother had met the Glenn’s. They became great friends and would go out to dinner together in D.C. They loved them and couldn’t say enough good things about them. I wish could have met them.
One of the best tips I’ve gotten from my chiropractor is that ice heals tendons and ligaments-20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. Your doctor or PT may not agree but if they don’t say no, try it.
In our younger marriage days I would cut my husband’s hair. Whenever I did, the cat would prowl around us howling loudly. She didn’t even like him much. Maybe she was encouraging me to hurt him?
As someone who trained in martial arts for nine years and became a second degree instructor, I much prefer imaging a slap across the face. Use the front or back of your hand. Less likely to cause real damage or bleeding.
Have you ever considered putting your right arm in a sling at these events?
I thought of her when I watched. What commitment it must take to embrace a public career that involves speaking. We are fortunate that they chose not to let it stop them☮️
Love Sherrod's new campaign ad! I think the ability to not take oneself too seriously is a huge requirement for a politician. We have too many working right now that think what they have to say is the be all and end all.
Connie, I have loved your husband for years and waited for fire to ignite in his belly for almost as long. The stakes are higher now, and I hope y’all will revisit your past decisions.
Here’s what I wrote my Senators Warnock and Ossoff today:
President Biden has been a good president with numerous accomplishments. I like him and am grateful to him.
He is, however, showing signs of cognitive decline. I can’t help but think of RUTH BATER GINSBERG AND DIANE FEINSTEIN who stayed past an appropriate time to resign and will forever be vilified for their decisions to stay too long. If Biden stays on the ballot and loses the presidency - and our democracy to Trump, Bannon, Miller, et al - that decision will completely eclipse his presidential accomplishments .
What would be the most heroic thing for Biden to do; what would seal his positive place in history; and what would position the democrats for success in November would be for him to be replaced by a younger candidate with the vigor and cognitive sharpness to endure four years of the presidency.
(And please, dear God, let it be Sherrod Brown and don’t let it be Gavin Newsome.)
i did not watch the debate because i don't care if biden screwed up, did not feel well, does not debate well or anything else. i will vote dem EVERY TIME REGARDLESS, because republicans are cruel and crazy
Suggestion: if you wear a wrist brace (like for carpal tunnel) people will either not shake your hand or at least touch more gently. I know someone who did this when cancer treatments were having the unexpected side effect of painful handshakes. It provides a nonverbal cue to people.
A year ago this September, I fell while on vacation in Oregon and broke my right elbow. Thankfully it was the last day of vacation, but I spent it in the ER. It was a compound fracture and I needed surgery that needed to wait until I got home. I now have a bionic elbow (to go along with my bionic knees!). It was traumatic flying home to Cleveland with a huge soft cast and a supply of pain meds. But I got through it and I now have full range of motion in my right arm. Physical therapy made that happen! I know it seems like forever, but before you know it you'll be good as new. Just a bump in the road! Oh, by the way, I'm a few years older than you, so my platform shoes are long gone! But try a wedge. It's more stable than the platform...but you probably thought of that! Love your postings; I've been following you since the Plain Dealer days.
Morning after the disasterous debate, this is the very first thing I read. I don't know what us Biden voters are going to do now, or if his performance was a fluke and will just blow over (soon, I hope). But as long as Connie Schultz keeps writing and Sherrod keeps running for the Senate, I think I can keep the impending doom I feel at bay until election day, at least. Thank you, Connie, for being you!
I nervously watched the debate while continuing my 2nd 100 postcards to Ohio voters telling them that we can trust Sherrod Brown and that he is good for Ohio and the USA. I got most of them done in record time. As my anxiety grew I channeled it into something proactive and positive. If there was room , I’d add the address to your Substack on them! You always put a smile on my face and give me something to think about. Keep shaking hands and I’ll keep working on my penmanship. Gotta get out the vote!
I’m not sure that I’ve ever read anything you’ve written that I haven’t laughed myself into tears. The dogs and the PT exercises were especially funny, though your “Once” comment on Sherrod’s suggestion about leaving your rings at home was also a winner.
You might try some infrared light laser therapy as a way to speed up the healing of your shoulder. A few years ago, I was so incapacitated by basal arthritis that I couldn’t even dress myself. After 6 fifteen minute treatments, however, I was able to enjoy playing pickleball again without any pain. Insurance doesn’t cover infrared light therapy, but the relief I experienced without drugs or cortisol shots was well worth the out-of-pocket cost.
I wish somehow that Sherrod did not face the chipper-shredder that is a Senate campaign. He has done so much good for Ohio. It shouldn’t be this hard. And for you, when it is someone you love battling to keep his job— it is stressful. This shouldn’t be the dominant message I took from this piece (I love reading about Annie Glenn and your personal PT helpers with four paws). And yet it is because 2024 is craziness. Take care, stay well … and I, too, want to read That Time I Didn’t Punch Him.
Lovely surprise to see your writing in my inbox, always.
I cannot watch tonight's debate. TFG will lie and mock and try and over talk President Biden, even if his mic is muted. His voice is like screeching nails on a blackboard. I'll want to throw something hard at my television. And I like my TV more than him.
I support the President wholeheartedly and nothing the mendacious former pospotus can say would change my mind.
I appreciate your point about the wonderful Mrs. Glenn. With toddlers you try and speak softly to get their attention to try and calm them down from a tantrum.
Would that it would work as well with adult toddlers and MAGA a$$hats

"Friendship is so often preserved by the quick edit." Love that and it is so true. Thank you, once again, for a wonderful piece of writing.

I am happy that I read your fun tutorial yesterday before the eye-opening tutorial on CNN last night.
